Like and unlike NCN, Tigerlad set off one day on a Gender Quest only to lose sight of his original goal in a tangle of (mis)adventures.

NCN is honored to be privy to Tigerlad’s ongoing tales, and doubly-honored to get to relay them to the world. His favorite part of performing is collaborating with the audience, and he’s always trying new tricks to make that happen. As a shy person, he most enjoys facilitating structured, low-pressure group activities such as games and art and writing prompts.

Kelsey Jarboe’s work is about collective memory, historical revisionism, and escapism, incorporating field recordings with songwriting, samples, spoken word, and abstract vocal improvisation. It attempts to evoke both familiarity and alienation: the uncanny of a home we have only seen on television or heard of in myth. The music is strongly influenced by both experimental and pop histories and is ideal for reclusive science fiction geeks.

Most recently, they have written music with the Theater Offensive’s True Colors Out Youth Theater program in Boston, and performed with local songstress Amanda Palmer at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. They also occasionally cameo at the Oberon for the drag/cabaret/genderblender show TranniWreck. In 2010, they performed in the Works-in-Progress Festival at the experimental performance art venue Mobius in Boston, and at the Somerville Armory with local legend Rick Berlin. Before that, they also played at the Arisia Science Fiction Convention and an anarchist gatheting in the woods.

Their live shows always involve high energy, catharsis, humor, and audience participation. One review of their most recent release, “Magical Realism”, wrote, “Poignant, powerful, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes whimsical, ‘Magical Realism’ expands significantly on last year’s excellent ‘Among Your Kind.’ A real masterpiece.” — Love and Mathematics (loveandmath.wordpress.com/2011/05/28/kelsey-jarboe-magical-realism/)

Most of his former photographic series have been about the struggles and triumphs of women as they strive for strength and independence living outside the lines of heteronormative expectations. He has always worked to create photographs and videos that give a voice to the unheard. His most celebrated art has been the documentation of the fight against the AIDS pandemic, sex workers, queer erotica, and women ex-cons. He creates art out of his own personal strife and the r/evolution of queer rights. His work is created to bring light to the dark and misunderstood as well as the beautiful, righteous people who have been cast away by society because of ignorance and fear. “Women Ex-cons” is about women in the prison system and the injustices suffered at the hands of a failing political system. “Life Force” is about a woman living with AIDS and was shown in Los Angeles was well as in the 1998 12th World AIDS Conferen ce in Geneva, Switzerland. He worked with ACT-UP NYC and ART POSITIVE NYC as a photographer in the fight against AIDS from 1988-1993 and created a tribute show about people living with AIDS for the first Day Without Art NYC in 1990.
Hailing from Philadelphia, Helyx Chase is a gender queer dyke video artist, activist and media literacy educator. Ze is a Hampshire College graduate with a degree in Video, Social Justice, Youth Empowerment and Global Power Dynamics. Hir work focuses on extending tools and promoting media creation, specifically for those who are systematically excluded from methods of media production. In 2010 Ze created the Midnight Media Coup as a formal expression of hir activist and artistic work.

Hir work includes The Trek Project, a multimedia exploration of how we see ourselves in a global context. The main component of the project is El Trompo, a short documentary that has been screened in many places including as a map-making installation in Amherst, MA and Philadelphia, PA. Additionally, ze created Remapping Our (his)Stories, a project that uses media literacy practice to reframe the ways we see and construct (his)Story. The project involved developing a youth program and curriculum as well as a multi-media installation, (his)Story: A Generation of Documentation. Both the curriculum and installation use community based and interactive practices to examine how we do and how we can document our own histories.

Hir work seeks to promote media literacy practice and alternative media production as a manner to dismantle and systematic oppression. Ze is a member of the Trans Oral History Collective and currently partnered with Trans-Genre to produce Visual Voices, a visual anthology of work by Trans Artists.

Leah B.’s main public offerings include production and distribution of a quarterly zine and live performances. The zine, “— and Her Brain”, is based heavily on her multiple experiences within transsexuality. Too many hidden years, mental unease, coming out, and a fiery re-birth are all depicted through poetry, prose, a little bit of photography, and some wayward sketches. Recently the editions have begun to include several writings and original artwork from Gender EDGE collective artists and allies.

Live performances consist of rather emotive spoken declarations and layered vocalization. Also included are raw, bass guitar driven, rather heavy (at times), lo-fi musical fragments in a duo set up.

Gender EDGE art speaks for the gender variant and queer souls we have lost to suicide, abuse, and murder. No more destroyed lives, no more hiding, and strength in strong numbers breeds undisputed natural human evolution.

Raised in Central Florida to be a good little Catholic girl, Bastian found out he was really a nice Jewish young man fairly early in life, but did not come out as trans* until 2005, when he was 23 and living in Kansas. Bastian is a writer and poet who dabbles in watercolor and oil painting, printmaking, and Native arts and crafts. He also plays trumpet, piano, baritone, bassoon, french horn, and sings…but does not practice as much as he should, aside from his trumpet in pep band.

Bastian Quinn Dubh-Ze’ev attends a small Catholic university, where he is out on campus and frequently participates in PFLAG Coming Out Panels across Wichita. He will graduate in 2011 with a degree in English and Elementary Education. Bastian plans on eventually teaching Special Education using Expressive Arts Therapies (Music/Drama/Dance/Art) and would eventually like to open his own school.

Unpublished professionally, he regularly contributes and edits his school’s yearly literary magazine. Bastian loathes traditional terms for sexual orientation and gender identity. He self-identifies as “heteroflexible” or “qweird.” He and his adorkable ftM boyfriend, Elliot Holloway, live in Wichita with their cat, Smokey Elvis, and dog, Rufus Valentine. They are active members of the Wichita Two-Spirit Society and regularly attend shul at Temple Emanu El. When they have time, they hold weekly TransFamily dinners for their small community.

Chastine Crystal Patterson is an artist in wood and engraving, teaching art, as well as performing and writing music. She has been blessed for 63 years with bringing this alive with a strong passion for music, as well as the performing arts.

Chastine finally emerged, two years ago, the female that she always was within. Known as Chas by her soul mate, partner and friends, Chas shows unyielding passions for life and her music.

Being a part of the Tranny Roadshow in 2008, as a local performer, added one more delightful and fulfilling chapter to her life. Being both born and raised in Colorado, Chastine has performed and written much of her own music over the last several decades. Growing up on the old 50s & 60s country music, this is where she not only shines, but comes to life.

The original artist is by her side and deep within her soul, bringing forth the passion and excitement that lives within us all, while bringing her own flame to every one she performs.
Writer, Artist, Musician

(Former female Sam Peterson describes his forays into a brave new world of masculinity via therapy and testosterone: one that involves “manfirmations,” sublime hilarity at the expense of self, and just general all’round trananigans. – ThaManSam.blogspot.com)

Sam Peterson is a Sam-of-all-trades. He’s tattooed AIDS activist/performance artist Diamanda Galas, been filmed by the Discovery Channel for their documentary on artists and piercing, been filmed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (TransGeneration, The Eyes of Tammy Faye), taught feminist porn-writing with Gynomite!, escaped from a cult, and played guitar at CBGBs. And that was before he manned-up!

There is no voice on the interwebs quite like Sam’s. His trans-cendant writing arcs past the union between the hormone-filled syringe and an anticipatory thigh. The path from F to M, so frequently rendered by a butch line drawing, in Sam’s world is a full-blown ecstatic vision. Sam decodes trans as the ultimate Trickster, waiting for that moment of silence to create mischief and even mayhem.
Sam hails from Austin, via Manhattan by way of D.C. seeing it ALL along the way. He works in Chapel Hill, NC now, painting out of his home studio, writing incessantly, and cracking wise about the tragicomic pratfalls of being a middle-aged former woman with an 18 year old boy’s brain, which, after decades of sex, drugs, rock and roll, and body modification, seems pretty darn placid.
Sam is gregarious, warm, and articulate. He would be delighted to speak at your college, school, bath house, or bank. Join him for a night of witty, gritty, savory, and sweet readings that will leave you wanting more.
